WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE FASHION?
We believe that people don’t just want fashionable clothes — they want to know that their purchase actually benefits the artisans behind a product. Sadly, the fashion industry is filled with stories of labor abuse, sweatshop conditions, and unfair wages. But it doesn’t have to be that way. That’s what Reclimkhadi’s sustainable fashion is all about: high-quality, environmentally responsible garments which genuinely benefit the artisans who make them.
Reclaim khadi is committed to treating these artisans with respect and dignity, supporting them as they continue a centuries-old tradition of time-honed craftsmanship. Not only does this result in a sustainable, environmentally responsible manufacturing process, it also means our customers can enjoy unique, handmade products which would otherwise be inaccessible to a global audience.
Sustainable since hour one.
Reclaim khadi fabrics are made in remote towns across West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, India with a history stretching back to the time of Mughal emperor Akbar in the 16th Century.
Here, each meter of fabric is handcrafted on a traditional charkha and handloom by a group of artisans who are passionate about using their skills to support their families and community. By making fabrics for Reclaim khadi, they not only get to do what they love, they also receive a respectable living income which provides them and their loved ones with food, shelter, education, and health care and most importantly the motivation to continue with this weaving art.
Reclaim khadi begins with locally sourced natural fabric which is hand-spun & hand woven. Cotton balls are picked by hand in the fields, then washed, fibre is cleaned to remove last traces of dirt. The fibre is spun on wheel by hand (Charkha) and is twisted at the same time to make it stronger.
Cotton yarn is prepared on bobbins that is easy to transport to weavers home. Fabric is woven on handloom by artisan. Then woven fabric is sent for dyeing. Our artisans craft the cloth by hand, using raw materials which support the regional economy. Our designers and tailors then convert this fabric into beautiful ready to wear pieces with great detailing and finesse. The result is a garment of remarkable quality — one which may just be the stylish and most comfortable dress you’ve ever worn. Find out for yourself.
